Gearing Up for the Geek-Over

This weekend is our annual Geek-Over! We'll work all night tonight, all day tomorrow and Sunday, and even stay on Monday to work through the President's Day holiday. Hard work? Sure is, but it's also fun -- and it's the best way to ensure that we stay concentrated on the task at hand. A big thank you to our teachers, Ms. Vasak, Mr. Lawton, and Mr. Guzman, who are staying to help us all weekend. And thank you also to the people who've donated meals for us... We're really fired up!

Below is a photo of what the robot looks like now. We'll post more photos of our weekend progress and diligence. We ship the final product out on Tuesday, so it's crunch time!

Story from a Newbie

My name is Michael Alatorre, and I’m currently a ninth grader at YES Prep Southeast. This is my first year on the Robotics team. As a new member of the robotics team, I can’t begin to describe how fun this experience has been. So far I’ve made new friends all from different grades of the school, and I’ve developed a sense of family and where I can be myself. Although in the beginning when I first joined, it was a little boring, it quickly started to get interactive when we started building the robot. Although it’s difficult trying to learn all the new terms for how to build the robot, I’m starting to acquire some of the skills of all the areas in the robotics team. I’m currently an apprentice at programming and mechanics, which are challenging parts on the team, but I’m just a piece of the whole that makes this club so fun to be with. I encourage everyone who reads this to join because it’s a fun experience that will keep you energetic till the end of the robotics completion.

So far, the work has been progressive and consistent. At the beginning of every week, we touch base on what needs to be accomplished. Then, all of the separate groups (carpentry, programming, mechanical, electrical, and fundraising) set up specific goals for the week’s progress. This has made the overall process more time effective and consistent. So far, we are still in the preliminary stages of design and setting up the basics. But having the specialized teams all working on the various set ups makes our work time faster and more productive as a whole. All in all, we’re working at a good pace and will keep you updated on the progress!

Being on the YES Prep Robotics Team 2737 has changed my views completely about robots and what this whole game is about. When you think of robots the image of Iron Man comes up... or Wall-e. The robots that we build are not just some silver metal walking things with arms; they do move, but to complete a specific task.

This is my third year on the team, and I'm growing more and more eager as the day of the competition creeps closer. Each year the group has increased in size and has gotten much closer; we work even better together now than then we first started because of the communications and bonds we've created within the group. It is exciting to see everyone working together day after day; even though some of us get annoyed by one other, we keep moving forward as a team and get the job done as a team. The energy that everyone creates when working encourages us as a group to strive for a chance at victory.

Victory, here we come!

We are in the progress of starting the robot. We have 23 days until we ship out! How exciting! We are all working very hard to get this done. Each team has their own goals and working towards achieving them. The Fundraising team has an ongoing project of selling snacks to the teachers. We are in the process of making a website along with this blog. We will keep you updated with all of our progress!(:

Marco's Story

One member of our team was nice enough to write a short story about his adventure at the Plano, Texas kick-off. This is Marco Cortez's story.

My robotics team 2737 attended the FIRST Robotics Kick-Off at Plano, Texas. We departed to Plano, Texas the day before the kick-off; it was a long five hour bus drive to La Quinta Inn. I think that the bus trip to Plano felt much longer and was much more fun that the bus ride home. This was probably because I was excited to go to Plano; it was my first time going in the trip because I did not go the year before. Plano was great; I enjoyed eating cookies and popcorn while working on the robot. I was on the Electrical group who was working on wiring up and setting up all the fundamental components of the robot. We had to drill holes in a plexi glass board so that we could attach the electronics to the frame. There were two other groups: the Chassis group and the Mechanical group. The Chassis group set up the motors, while the Mechanical group worked on assembling the robot frame. At the end of the day, we gathered to put all the parts together: the motors, the frame, and the electrical board. We were missing some parts but we managed to get all the vital components together.

WELCOME BACK!!

We are the YES Robotics Team 2737! Last year was our first year participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition and after a year of waiting it is that time again! We are now preparing for our second robotics competition. We are working hard and hoping for an incredible season.

Soon we will be posting up pictures of our hard work and more updates on how things are going so check in!

Today was the last day of the FIRST Robotics Competition. We won our first match today! Although we didn't win the competition we had a lot of fun and that is all that matters.

Today was the first day of matches. It was so much fun. Our team didn't win any matches today but it was ok. All that matters is that we tried and we had a lot of fun. We made a lot of new friends and learned a lot. I will post videos and pictures today.

Okay so today we are working on the robot. Saw some videos of people we were up against and uploading pictures about the Dallas Kickoff [and no its not a football fest].
